New Jersey Democratic Senator Robert Menendez and his wife, Nadine, have been accused of accepting bribes totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars, as revealed by the Justice Department.

According to prosecutors, the couple allegedly received gold bars and cash-filled envelopes from businessmen in New Jersey. The funds were purportedly used to clandestinely support the Egyptian government.

Both Senator Menendez and his wife have strongly refuted these allegations.

They now face three criminal charges, including conspiracy to commit bribery, conspiracy to commit honest services fraud, and conspiracy to commit extortion under the color of official right.

The indictment follows an extensive investigation by the Justice Department spanning several years.

Prosecutors claim that the Menendezes accepted bribes in various forms, including cash, gold, contributions towards a home mortgage, and a high-end vehicle from three individuals in New Jersey: Wael Hana, Jose Uribe, and Fred Daibes.

In addition to allegedly assisting the Egyptian government, they are accused of using Senator Menendez’s influence to shield the three businessmen, as outlined in the indictment.

Senator Menendez, 69, holds the position of chairman on the Senate Foreign Relations committee and was re-elected for a third term in the Senate in 2018.

The indictment asserts that his leadership role on the committee provided him with significant sway in these matters. Bob Menendez

In a statement issued by her legal representation, Mrs. Menendez vehemently denied any wrongdoing and pledged to defend herself in court.

Senator Menendez also contested the charges, framing them as politically motivated.

He stated, “For years, hidden forces have attempted to silence my voice and undermine my political standing… I am confident that this matter will be resolved when all the facts are presented.”

In the summer of 2022, federal agents executed search warrants at Senator Bob Menendez’s residence, unearthing evidence of alleged bribery agreements, including over $480,000 in cash, much of which was discovered concealed in envelopes and clothing.

The agents also reportedly found a Mercedes-Benz luxury vehicle, funded by Mr. Uribe, in the garage, along with $100,000 worth of gold bars in the home.

During a news conference, prosecutors cited Senator Menendez’s own website, where he delineates the limitations of his legislative power, including an inability to intervene in criminal cases.

“Behind the scenes, Senator Bob enendez was doing those things for certain people – the people who were bribing him and his wife,” stated Damian Williams, the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Bob Menendez

According to the indictment, Mrs. Menendez collaborated with one of the businessmen, Mr. Hana, to introduce the senator to Egyptian intelligence and military officials. Thousands of text messages exchanged between Mrs. Menendez and Mr. Hana were allegedly deleted from her phone.

The indictment further claims that Mr. Hana and Mrs. Menendez orchestrated a “corrupt agreement” in which money provided by the businessman would lead to Senator Menendez benefiting the Egyptian government through foreign military sales and financing.

Prosecutors also allege that Senator Menendez covertly authored a letter on behalf of the Egyptian government, urging other US senators to release a hold on $300 million in aid to Egypt.

In return for assisting Egyptian officials, Mr. Hana purportedly offered Mrs. Menendez a “low-or-no-show” job.

Senator Menendez is additionally accused of accepting a Mercedes-Benz convertible in exchange for obstructing a New Jersey state criminal prosecution involving an associate of Mr. Uribe.

As a consequence of the charges, the Menendezes have been instructed to forfeit several assets, including their New Jersey residence.

The BBC has sought comments from businesses owned by Mr. Hana and Mr. Daibes, while the Embassy of Egypt in Washington DC has not responded to requests for comment.

This marks the second time Senator Menendez has faced bribery charges. In 2015, he was indicted in New Jersey for allegedly accepting bribes, including luxurious vacations, from a wealthy Florida eye doctor. The case ended in a mistrial when jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict.
